Actor Sonu Sood has evaded taxes of over ₹ 20 crore, the income tax department said in a statement today, after visiting his Mumbai home for three days in a row for a search. Mr Sood, 48, had recently announced a tie-up with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party government.
According to the allegations against the actor, whose philanthropic efforts for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have earned huge praise, his non-profit Sood Charity Foundation set up in July last year during the Covid first wave collected donations of over ₹ 18 crore till April this year, out of which ₹ 1.9 crore has been spent on relief work and the balance ₹ 17 crore has been lying unused in the non-profit’s bank account.
Sources have said “a recent deal between Sonu Sood’s company and a Lucknow-based real estate firm is under the scanner”, and the survey operation began on allegations of tax evasion on this deal.
Actor Sonu Sood posted a message on Twitter following Income Tax raids last week at places linked to him and allegations of tax evasion. Sood’s message stated that ‘every rupee’ in his foundation was ‘awaiting its turn to save a life’. He also took a dig at the IT department, commenting that he had been “busy attending to guests’ for four days.
